Quick and Easy Ideas For Accessorizing Your Home from a Retail Display

For those who are new to Diva by Design and my blog “The Diva’s Home”, welcome! Today is an exciting day for me because I have rented booth space in a new Antique and Collectibles shop in downtown Harlingen called 4 Ever Memories. Lately, I have been showing at Jackson Street Market Days in Harlingen on the first Saturday of each month. It’s fun and I get to meet people in person to let them know about my interior decorating business as well as my vintage home decor finds.

Each month I have more and more people asking me if I have a shop of my own. While I am not to that point yet, I decided to rent a small space so that you can find me in person and not just online. If you’re in the neighborhood, why not go by and visit? The shop’s Grand Opening is today!

How to Add Height to Your Home Accessories

You can get some good ideas on how to place accessories in your home from retail stores. When you purchase accessories for your home, buy things in different sizes. If you find that you have lots of things that are small, they can get lost in the crowd. If that’s all you have at the moment, you can solve the problem with the tip below.

One of the biggest secrets to placing accessories like a pro is to use “lifts and levels”. Remember Christopher Lowell? He says that all the time. It’s a good way to incorporate height in your display when you have lots of small items. Notice how I have used the bamboo stool to add height here:

Add height to your home accessory display with
Add height to your home accessory display with “lifts”

Not only have I used the bamboo stool, but I also have the white terracotta stand to add a middle height to the display. Notice the tall floral arrangement and how it bridges the gap between the tabletop and the memo board hanging behind it. It overlaps, but doesn’t hide the piece and brings it into the arrangement on the table.

The bamboo stool with the glass tray does the same thing for the framed needlepoint on the other side. And in the middle is the other stand to give a better view of small items. High, middle, and low. The height lends importance and interest to the grouping of objects and helps the eye travel over the display.

How to Use Odd Numbers in Your Home Accessory Display

You can see how I used odd numbers in the display above. One large floral arrangement, three objects on the “wall”, five things on top of the bamboo stool, etc. Not every grouping has an odd number. It’s a guide and not a rule. Though you can call it a rule since breaking them is okay when you need to! You could say that they tray with the small frames is an even-numbered group because there are seven frames and one tray to make eight. Or you could say that the frames themselves make an odd-numbered group. Either way works.

The reason to group your things in odd numbers is because it ends up to be more aesthetically pleasing. If that sounds too much like a “snooty designer” way of putting it, just say it usually looks better that way. 😉

How to Accessorize by Color in Your Home

You can group like items, collections, or group your things according to color. Here, I used color. My basic palette is pink, burlap tan, and gold. Yes, there is some silver and white thrown in, but I started with pink. The silk roses, cylindrical vase, Depression Glass trays, and the small bottle. I love the look of pink and gold so I added the brass candlesticks, the gold birds, the urn, and the other brass items on the table. The burlap and the bamboo serve as a neutral to ground the whole display.

The one thing I haven’t mentioned is how I used color to move the eye. Take the wall. The framed needlepoint has all the colors used in the display. So the pink starts on the wall, moves to the tray on the bamboo stand, down to the silk roses and glass, and next to the gravy boat, tea towel, and second glass tray on the table itself.

Then the shine of the brass. The mirror on the wall isn’t brass, but it does shine. Then the candlesticks on the stool, the large floral arrangement, the birds, and the brass items on the table. As for the tan, you guessed it! It’s in the memo board and the needlepoint, the floral arrangement and in the stone. You don’t have to have each color everywhere you look. just enough to pull it all together.

How to Use Art to Create a Paint Color Palette

Are you having a hard time deciding what color to paint your room? Just one room or your whole house? An excellent way to choose a color scheme is to use your favorite piece of art. A painting, a print, or even a photograph can be the basis of the colors you choose to decorate your home with. I’ve done this myself in my own home, and helped clients do the same in theirs. It’s a good way to find colors that you like. How do I know you will like the colors? You like the art don’t you?

The first thing you need to do to choose your color palette is:

Find a piece of art that you truly love. It doesn’t have to be from a Master. It can be your favorite picture from your dream vacation. You know, the one with the beautiful view or the ceiling of the amazing ________ (you fill in the blank) that you visited and can’t get out of your head. Yes, that one.

The second thing you need to do to find your color palette is:

Get out that picture, painting, or print and look at it. I mean, really look at it. Study it. What is it that draws you to it? What is the feeling that it gives you when you see it? Is that a feeling that you would like to have in your room? yes? Then look at the combination of colors you find there. Choose the main color. The one that stands out the most.

Next, choose the second color that stands out. And then the next, and the next. Confused? Here’s an example:

Empty hammock in the tropical beach in the Maldives at sunset
Empty hammock in the tropical beach in the Maldives at sunset

Say you want to convey the sense of peace, calm, and tranquility that a beautiful sunset on your favorite beach brings to you. What is the main color in this photo? The blue of the sky? The white of the sand? Maybe the green of the flora? To me, it would be the pale blue of the sky or the aqua color of the water since blue is a calm, peaceful color. So our first color choice is blue.

Blues from the sky, water, cloud, and shadow

Then choose the second most prominent color such as, the sand

We can also choose the green for accent

The third thing you need to do to find your color palette is:

Pull colors from the image, and play around with combinations to get the perfect color palette for your room.

Aqua for the walls, gray for the floors, the trim in white, and the navy as an accent. Or you could go completely neutral with

Paint the walls in the blush color with the flooring in gray or light brown, with the trim in white and the furnishings in white.

Sample Color Palette 3

In this palette, the walls in blue ceiling and trim in white, blush and gray as accents. You say I didn’t use the green? In my opinion, since it is such a strong shade of green, I would use it by adding plants to your space. The perfect accent to any room in the house. It’s that easy! The Diva’s Home and Etsy

Happy Monday! Today I am announcing my new shop on Etsy. It has been a couple of months of hard work (sometimes gross work) to get my shop up and running, but I am proud of my effort and I hope you like it too.

I will be placing a badge on my website www.mydivabydesign.com, and hope fully the one here will work too.

O

Do me a favor and take a look!

vintage_brass_oval_glass_frame_diva_by_design
Victorian Style Bubble Glass Picture Frame from Italy. The most popular item in my shop right now!

Everything listed on Etsy is either handmade or vintage so there are no brand new items there. But I search for nice things to share with you and everything listed is in good or better condition. I also sell furniture that I fix up, but I don’t ship that so if you are in the Harlingen area, come visit me at Market Days on Jackson Street on Saturday, July 11. Should be nice and hot!

I will also be adding things that I can’t list on Etsy to my website, but right now that page (click here) has the beginnings of my E-design mood board offerings.

I know, you don’t read my blog to be sold to and I rarely post anything I have for sale. But I AM an interior decorator and I DO need to make money in my business so that I can keep blogging and giving you more home decorating tips and advice. Otherwise, what’s the point of having a business?

A Day of Remembering

in_remembrance

Today we remember those who gave their lives in military service to our country. As Americans, we are grateful for their sacrifice. We could not enjoy the freedoms that we have today without it.

As you go about your day, please take a moment to say a prayer for the families of those who have fallen fighting for our freedom.

Four Colorful Ideas for Painting Your Cottage Style Home

In Add Character to Your Home with Cottage Style Decorating, I wrote about the characteristics of the Cottage decorating style. If this style fits your design personality, I have some color palettes that might work for you. If you are tired of all the grays and want to add some subtle color this palette makes a good start with some pinks and taupes.

It’s still a little neutral, but with a slight hint of color for those not ready to completely redo everything.

The next home decorating color palette is still neutral, but adds hints of green and blue to bring in nature.

If you’re ready for more color that isn’t too bold, this next palette might whet your appetite.

And, last but not least, go bolder with this palette of blue, green, and pink.

Create a Design File That Will Knock Your Decorator’s Socks Off!

When you work with an interior decorator, they have many things at the ready to make your project a success. Not the least of which is a Style File, or Design file. Many of your decorator’s ideas are still in her head when she works on your project. But, she will also have a Style File that she can refer to when needed to make your space work perfectly for you.

You can make your own if you like. I have written about this in my Design Planning for Real Life 2015 series that is going on right now. You can click the title above to sign up for the series right now.

Some of the things that go into a decorator’s Style File might be different from yours. If you like, you can always add these for a more complete picture of what you want in your room. In your interior decorator’s file she is going to have:

  • A floor plan – For every decorator, a floor plan of your space that is drawn to scale. Within this floor plan, she has notes of all the dimensions of your furniture, the locations of your fireplace, outlets, windows, and doorways. Your floor plan needs to have every detail noted to make it simpler to plan where everything will go.

Floor Plan

  • Paint swatches – These must be in the file! Color is the most difficult element to remember. You will have an idea of a color in your head, but you (and I) will never remember it exactly. Plus, you take it with you when shopping for furniture or fabric. Your mind plays tricks on you with color. You might think that the piece you just found matches exactly but when you get it home it’s a little bit off, or a lot off.

Do-You-Have-a-Plan3

  • Fabric samples – Get samples of your fabric from your current furniture and curtains. You will want it when shopping. Remember, color is hard to get right when it’s in your head!

Yellow Fabric

  • Photo inspirations – Pull pictures from magazines, print them from the internet, and wherever else you find inspiration. These are images of the things you love and help define your design personality. It is good to have them at hand when you come across something special and you want to see if it will go with your room.

cartoline turismo collage

  • Tape measure – A decorator’s most valuable tool! And yours. You need to know the dimensions of everything! You can’t just guess-ti-mate because we all know what happens when you assume. Know your space and if the new items will fit.

tape measure

Keep everything together because this will help you create the room of your dreams.

Sometimes Life Gets in the Way

Add text (4)

Do you ever feel this way? Or just too overwhelmed to live right now?

So….I planned to have a wall elevation for my master bathroom to show you today. Didn’t happen. Sometimes life has other plans for us and we just have to roll with them or get run over. My plans were to finish the wall elevation for the over the toilet wall that I gave you ideas for on Wednesday. It’s still sitting open on my desktop waiting for me to work on it.

I’m a real person just like you. I have children, a husband, a cat, four dogs, four horses, and a mix of fourteen goats and sheep. Oh! I almost forgot the rabbit! Some days this little Rabbit Army Ranch gets the best of me, and then one of my children decides to tell me that they have a tennis tournament tomorrow which means, “You’re going to be there, right?” (Tennis matches take forever!)

So needless to say, I don’t have a cute design elevation to show you. It is on the way. I haven’t forgotten about it. And I am actually anxious to get it done because I plan to build me some shelves but I need to plan it out first. I hope you forgive me and I also hope that your weekend is relaxing and fun. Thank you for reading my posts. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you caring what I have to say about decorating.

Leave a comment to let me know your experiences with life getting in the way of something you really want to do. I’d love to get to know you. Have a wonderful weekend and we will be back to regularly scheduled posts on Monday!

Who Knew ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ Was Sexy?

Who Knew theTwelve Days of

All of the references I have seen to the verse “eight maids a-milking” have been about sex. Asking the ‘maid’ to “go a-milking” meant either “Marry me” (romantic) or “Have an affair with me” (subtle). Not surprising to me since I actually took a class in college on Sixteenth Century music. Most of the music in church then were lusty lyrics from folk songs set to church music. That’s one way to get people to come to church on Sunday.

What does this have to do with interior decorating? Not much, unless you want to decorate with a barnyard theme. Just don’t call me if that’s what you want! I live on a small ranch but I refuse to bring it inside with me. Except maybe this horse!

I know who I am and what my design style is. Have you figured out yours? In January, I am starting a home designing lesson series called, “Design Planning for Real Life 2015 – How to Design Your Home So You Save Time, Money, and Make Less Mistakes. You can sign up for it on my website. If you’ve read my About page here on the blog you know that I feel that your home, how it’s decorated, and how you feel in it affects every aspect of your life.

This idea isn’t new. In fact, it’s one of the reasons that Feng Shui is so popular. Most of the principles taught have to do with the energy flowing throughout your home and how that energy, or Chi, affects you. Feng Shui has been around for thousands of years and many people use it’s principles to decorate their home for good luck. I don’t know how lucky it is, but there are many common sense ideas to be found.

eighth_day2(2)

One of these is the concept of ‘stuck’ energy. Mostly this comes from having too much clutter in and around your home. The feelings that come from having too much stuff can really bring you down. Especially those of us who live in small homes. Clutter makes life more difficult than it has to be. Keeping the clutter weighs on your mind and spirit and these feelings can affect you at home, work, and even your relationships with others.

Have you seen the show “Hoarders”? The families of the ones hoarding are having just as hard a time as the one who’s home is packed to the rafters with crap. Clutter has made an impact on each of them.

If you are having a hard time getting started on decorating your home, this may be one of the reasons. I will be going over clearing your clutter as the first step in your interior design planning. But before that, I thought it would be fun for you to get to know what you like so that when it comes time to choose the pretty stuff for your home, you already have a direction from which to start.

eighth_day1(2)

Here’s an exercise to get you started on finding out who you are ‘design-wise’. (Is that even a word?) I got it from Denny Daikeler’s book, What Color is Your Slipcover?:

Look around you at the things you have in your home and think about what words describe them and represent how they make you feel. An example might be your sofa. Describe it. Mine is large, solid, soft, and supportive. It represents nights watching movies with my family, sitting around talking with each other, and comfort.

Spend some time looking around each room in your home and thinking about what things represent to you. Pick one thing out of your home that ‘speaks’ to you the most. This object is an “outside representation” of who you are right now. Don’t be in a hurry and don’t ask for anyone else’s opinion. Only you know what is in your heart.

Once you have found it, start a decorating plan journal and write down what it is and how it represents you. Write down why you like it and why you chose it. We are beginning to get in touch with how things can affect the way you feel. You’ll see and you may be very surprised by what you find.

You might be wondering at the pictures in this post. These are some of my favorite things from around my house. None of them are new, but are things that I have always loved and still do. They fit my decorating style. Each was purchased at different stores and several years in between, but they all have a place in my home and will for a long time.
