People get this style mixed up with Modern Style because of the name. Modern Style actually refers to Mid-Century Modern. Contemporary Style is whatever is trending in the marketplace right now. It is an ever-changing style because tastes keep changing. As I am writing this, Contemporary design is casual and eclectic with an emphasis on comfort. Sleek furniture, open spaces, and tone-on-tone neutral color palettes define what people are looking for in 2015.
That’s not to say that there isn’t any color. Accessories are used to bring in color in small doses. It could even be that there is only one, single shot of color in an entire room maybe in a painting, an area rug, or pillows or throws.
Contemporary decorating is similar to Mid-Century Modern with furniture that has sleek, clean lines and no heavy carving or embellishment. The difference is in the color of woods used. Lighter colored woods are popular. The gray-ish color of driftwood is everywhere right now.
Recently, metals used were mostly stainless steel, nickel, and chrome. But this year, we are starting to see brushed brass creeping into the mix. Already things are starting to change.
If you love pieces from different styles and want to combine them, then this decorating style is you. Are you drawn to hard-edged, pared down spaces that rely on the materials used rather than color for visual interest? Do want comfort and sustainability in the pieces you use?
Open floor plans, spacious interiors with rich textures and soft fabrics are all combined with natural elements and geometric shapes in Contemporary style. You can borrow pieces from all different eras to put in your home, such as, taking furniture and art from Mid-Century Modern and putting them in rooms that have Traditional moldings and mill work.
